Where's the love for Black girls?
This Valentine’s Day I ask, where is the love for Black women in our society? In recent weeks, my social media feeds and news sources have been dominated with reports of young Black queens being violently attacked and verbally abused because of the colour of their skin. Yet, many of these horrific events are only reported on Black media outlets or on the accounts of Black activists. Where is the love, respect and protection that Black women of all ages deserve?
Such reports are nothing new, Black girls and women are constantly mistreated in our society, but when will it change and what will it take for radical change?
I dedicate this post to all of those who continue to show bravery in times of injustice. To those who do all they can to support and report on the many injustices that plague our society; and to the disruptors on the ground who continue to fight for equality.
On this Valentine’s Day my thoughts are with those who are left with the physical and emotional trauma that such attacks bring. My love goes to all my Black sisters who deserve the world. My heart goes out to those, and their families, who have lost their lives as a result of racial and/or sexual violence, whose horrendous stories were also not deemed newsworthy to be covered properly by dominate media outlets.
On this Valentine’s Day I hope the young girl who was violently attacked outside of her school in Ashford, Surrey is showered with all the love and healing she deserves. My prayers are also with the many Black girls and women who go missing, but are not searched for in the same way as their White counterparts. The Black girls and women who go missing, but never receive any of the newspaper coverage or police appeals you see when a White girl or women goes missing.
